It was a fresh summer day, as happens after rain. The air was clear and the sky was a cool blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds. It would have been nice if the landscape looked the part, rolling green hills say. But it didn't. It was patchy and scrubby and full of thistles. The grass was long and filled with wildflowers and the occasional straggy tree, but most of all it was covered with gorse, the tree world's answer to the cactus.
